Project Samples - Archive
Whirling Dervish Productions

Here are samples that have been dug out from the past 10 years of production work. Although they may only be of interest to friends, family and the daft, they nevertheless deserve to once again have the cobwebs wiped off and be dragged up to the surface!

I Can't Wait - by The Douglas Fairbanks Project | 5.02mb - 4:42

Words and Music by Douglas Alex Ross, Jr. - 2002

The following 4x songs were a mixing project that I did for Doug for his CD, The Douglas Fairbanks Project. He provided me with the raw tracks, and I had the labor-intensive task of bringing them to life. To this day, it is still one of my favorite projects that I have worked on.
play
So Arbitrary - by The Douglas Fairbanks Project | 5.45mb - 5:05

Words and Music by Douglas Alex Ross, Jr. - 2002
play
I Want 2 Feel U - by The Douglas Fairbanks Project | 4.41mb - 4:08

Words and Music by Douglas Alex Ross, Jr. - 2002

Once again, this song is an example of how a mix can dramatically change the sound and feel of a song. The result of this mix took the song in a direction that was much different than Douglas had expected!
play
I've Gone (I Won't Drown) - by The Douglas Fairbanks Project | 4.78mb - 4:25

Words and Music by Douglas Alex Ross, Jr. - 2002

This song ended up being the hardest of the collection to mix, with tons of layering of sounds and effects. It's my favorite of the CD.
play
Pleasure is Back - by Sandi Hammond | 4.78mb - 4:25

Words and Music by Sandi Hammond - 2005

Sandi and I worked together tirelessly for a year to put together her CD entitled, "This Summer Night". These three songs represent my first full-scale production that I completed with guitar, bass and drums. This was a huge achievement for me!
play
This Summer Night - by Sandi Hammond | 4.78mb - 4:25

Words and Music by Sandi Hammond - 2005

This song evokes a smokey jazz-bar image from the heart of New Orleans. It's meant to do just that.
play
In Another World - by Sandi Hammond | 4.78mb - 4:25

Words and Music by Sandi Hammond - 2005

Epic tale of love lost by distance. Fantastic vocal layering featured here. Check out the violin bridge!
play
Blurr - by Kelly J. Seager | 4.63mb - 4:03

Music by Instrumentation by Kelly J. Seager - 2002

This was my maiden voyage recording with Protools. Never crazy about the results, but everyone is their own worst critic, right?
play
Pony Tales - by Kelly J. Seager | 3.80mb - 3:17

Music by Instrumentation by Kelly J. Seager - 2002

I came up with the main riff for this song one beautiful evening in a motel in British Columbia, while on a family trip out west with my parents. It stayed in my head for several years before I committed it to a recording. Not crazy about this recording, either... but it is what it is.
play
Funkabout - by Kelly J. Seager | 5.24mb - 4:59

Music and by Instrumentation by Kelly J. Seager - 2003

I'm still saving this song for a rainy day. It was never finished, and this version is merely a "scratch pad" of ideas. Someone once told me it would be great with lyrics and vocals. I could never hear it that way!
play
Goodbye Five - by Kelly J. Seager | 4.53mb - 3:59

Words, Music and by Instrumentation by Kelly J. Seager - 2003

This and the next tune were written during a year's period when I went nuts writing children's songs. It was a thriving time, thanks to Protools! Although these may not be the most "kid like" of the pack, they were the best of the rest.
play
Guitar Down - by Kelly J. Seager | 3.13mb - 2:51

Words, Music and by Instrumentation by Kelly J. Seager - 2003

Guitar Down, ironically, pretty much ended up being the final kids song that I wrote during this phase. It seemed fitting that the theme of the song marked what really was a "guitar down" for my kids songs era.

It's by far my favorite of all the kids songs I've done.
play
Medicine Man - by Primrose Path | 7.70mb - 6:59

Words and Music by Douglas Alex Ross, Jr. - 1997

I recorded and produced this song on a Tascam D-88 8-track digital machine, while I was the drummer with the group.
play
Mary Go Round - by Primrose Path | 6.80mb - 6:15

Words and Music by Chris Inglesi - 1997

Mary Go Round was the last recording I did with Primrose Path; also with a D-88. Sorry for the terrible sound. What can I say, this was 1997.

The song has bitter-sweet memories, as the sweet lady that I played with during the guitar/violin duet in the bridge, was tragically killed in a plane crash just weeks after I recorded her.
play
Merchant Marine - by Da Vinci's Flying Machine | 3.30mb - 3:02

Poem by Josephine Miles, Music by Douglas Alex Ross, Jr. - 1995

Doug derived this poignant song from a poem that brought him memories of his mariner father.

I recorded these 4x songs while I was the drummer with the band, and Doug and I were musical partners. We actually recorded this by piggy-backing 2x Tascam D-88s. It was the first multi-track recording that I did that had more than 4x tracks! Woo Hoo!
play
Sweet Faith - by Da Vinci's Flying Machine | 4.88mb - 4:26

Words and Music by Douglas Alex Ross, Jr. - 1995

We thought we were pretty slick with this one...
play
Nothing is Nothing - by Da Vinci's Flying Machine | 5.47mb - 4:58

Words and Music by Douglas Alex Ross, Jr. - 1995

This was a favorite production of mine for a very long time. It's a simple but powerful song, particularly the guitar/drum interplay.
play
Leaves (In the Wind) - by Da Vinci's Flying Machine | 7.23mb - 6:49

Words and Music by Douglas Alex Ross, Jr. - 1995

Leaves in the Wind was a song that was special to me to play as a duet with Doug. It marked some good times! That's me singing the soprano part.
play
I Die (1993) - by 777 | 9.36mb - 9:03

Words and Music by Douglas Alex Ross, Jr.

This was the first multitrack recording that Doug and I did. We used my Tascam Portaone 4-track cassette machine bounced over to a VHS Hi-Fi videotape machine. I recently found the original tracks on a videotape and remixed it.

I have always been very fond of this song, and this particular recording (it has much more "vibe" than the later version) - thus my including it here.

Since you've gotten this far... check out the bottom link on the right in the sidebar for the hidden "bonus" samples page. These are deep cuts that are far down in the vaults gathering dust, and ones that rarely get pulled out these days.

Don't tell anyone you've found them... It's a SECRET!!
